1. What does the Basic Cruising Standard course entail?

The Basic Cruising Standard course is an entry-level program in the Sail Canada series for cruising skippers. Students learn about essential safety equipment, handling emergencies, collision avoidance rules, interpreting weather forecasts, and basic navigation using charts and tide tables.

2. What is the format of the Basic Cruising Standard program?

The program consists of theory sessions conducted online, followed by practical sessions either as day sailing or live-aboard experiences. The theory component includes a written exam, while the practical component involves 24 hours of practice, either in day sailing sessions or a 4-day live-aboard course.

3. When are the practice sessions held?

Practice sessions are conducted on weekdays from 8 am to 2 pm. Weekend sessions are available for an additional $50 fee.

4. What are the prerequisites for enrolling in the Basic Cruising Standard course?

There are no prerequisites for the Basic Cruising Standard course, making it accessible to beginners and seasoned sailors alike. Whether you're new to sailing or looking to enhance your skills, this course is designed to accommodate learners of all levels.

5. Is there a challenge Basic Cruising Standard opportunity?

A challenge session with a minimum of 4 hours is also required, accompanied by a written exam.

6. What does the Intermediate Cruising Standard course entail?

The Intermediate Cruising Standard course builds upon the foundation laid by the Basic Cruising Standard, focusing on further development of sailing skills and experience. Participants will operate the vessel as both crew and skipper, practicing navigation, sail handling, and maneuvering techniques during daytime passages. This live-aboard course is designed to prepare students for live-aboard cruises and bareboat charters.

7. What is the format of the Intermediate Cruising Standard program?

The program consists of online theory sessions with written exam followed by a 7-day live-aboard program.

8. What are the Prerequisites for Intermediate Cruising Standard program

Prerequisites for enrollment include holding licenses and certificates such as PCOC, Basic Cruising Standard, VHF with DSC endorsement, and Basic Coastal Navigation. Candidates should also have experience as a skipper and demonstrate proficiency in skills learned in the Basic Cruising Standard and Basic Coastal Navigation Standard.

9. Where are the practice sessions held?

Practice sessions are conducted from November to May in the Caribbean Islands. These sessions cover a range of skills, including sail selection and adjustment, maneuvering, anchoring strategies, docking procedures, navigation, and vessel systems management. Students are also responsible for provisioning and meal preparation during the course.

10. How can I enroll in the course?
